How to Spruce up a Room

How to Spruce up a Room

You don't need a degree in interior design to reinvigorate your living space and freshening up a room doesn't have to be a costly endeavor. A few simple changes can go a long way when it comes to sprucing up your home. Here are just a few ways you can begin to reimagine your home and create a place where you'll love to spend time.

Try a Fresh Can of Paint

Sometimes, all you need is a can of paint and a brush to bring a new feel to your room. Choose bright colors or pastels to reinvigorate and lighten a space and dark colors to create a more dramatic effect. If you're feeling especially brave, try painting an accent wall a different color or adding a design like stripes or borders. While painting may feel like a big commitment, it's an easy and relatively affordable way to update and transform the look of a room. If you don't like the finished product, you can always paint over it.

Rearrange Furniture

Having the right furniture in the right place can help make any room feel more functional and coherent, no matter the size.

Rearranging your furniture can have the same effect and freshen up the feel of a space.

First, consider the main purpose of the room. For instance, if you plan to use it for watching TV, make that the focal point. Likewise, your bed should be the focus in your bedroom. Feel free to experiment with angled furniture to draw the eye where you want it to go.

Add a Rug

Unfurling a new rug can dramatically change the atmosphere of a room as well. It adds depth, so the larger the carpet, the bigger your room will feel.

Unify your color scheme by matching it with things you already own, like throw pillows, table centerpieces and other decor.

Choose among traditional, contemporary or transitional rugs depending on the style of your home. Remember, they aren't just for covering hardwood — you can use them on carpeted surfaces, as well.

Incorporate Texture

A bunch of flat frames on a wall creates a sleek look, but sometimes your walls need a refresh. Banish bland art by adding a variety of textures. Hang tapestries or woven wall hangs or add geometrical shelves or unframed canvas prints. You can even hang plants from ceiling hooks or add them to your shelves for a bright pop of green and a leafy, earthy feel. Artsy mirrors can also add dimension, depth and light to your space.

Keep It Simple

When it comes to sprucing up your room, the key is to keep it simple. The last thing you want is to try painting, rearranging and decorating a room all at once. This is likely to leave you overwhelmed and frustrated. Instead, focus on one thing at a time. Add a rug, paint a single wall or simply angle your couch differently. Even the smallest change or addition has the power to transform an entire room.
